Yesterday I realized I have a similar problem. My computer room is on the second floor of the house, and that's where my Linksys BEFSR41 router and WAP11 802.11b AP live. I've got a pair of ThinkPad A21M laptops that I roam around the house with, and on the ground floor, an XBOX and TiVo that aren't currently connected to anything.
Running a wire between floors isn't really convenient, so I started looking at the options available. I could get a WUSB11 for the TiVo at $65 and a WGA11B for the XBOX for $98, but that seems excessive, when a WET11 bridge is $128. Amazingly enough, the WRT54G is even less, at $113. Interestingly enough, when I looked for info on using the WRT54G in client mode, this is the third hit I found. How is it working out for you?
Client mode is working well for me with the Tivo, but I only really have that one device plugged in. When you plug in multiple devices and try to establish connections from the outside to them there are some issues with seeing more than one, but for connections initiated from the devices themselves it is fine.
Help. I have two 54G's and want to connect them wirelessly. I am totally confused by the instructions since I am not a computer expert. Is there an easier way?
Rasmus, what made you decide against running CAT5 cable to points in the wall? The cost vs. speed/security/reliability would pay for itself I'd expect. I'm curious because I'll be faced with this same issue when I get a place of my own in a few months. (The guys I live with have as much CAT5 as me strewn everywhere ;)
hi rasmus
i'm looking for a port of iperf for the wrt54G. where did you find yours ? did you build it by your own means ? TIA
Did you compare the Sveasoft firmware with wifiBox (http://sourceforge.net/projects/wifi-box/)? I currently use wifiBox, but only because I couldn't find any alternatives.
I'll have a look at the sveasoft firmware.
would you happen to have the steps to do this????
Thanks | V >>>> One very useful feature of client mode would be to bring it on trips. With its superior radio combined with one of the Hyperlink antennas it should be able to pick up open gateways at quite a distance. See the Kismet post for further details on using it for finding gateways and with client mode you could then associate the wrt with a gateway and plug yourself into one of the wired ports. No more messing around with wireless drivers on your laptop.
I need 802.16 wireless equipment, when it is released.
Must be able to ship to London UK. Thanks |
Why a toys page?I love geeky toys and people are always asking me about them. So this page is where I keep track of the gadgets that interest me.
